Estate Sales: 30 Day Diary Of An Estate Liquidator Day 9

…Each day for the next 30 days, I will write about my experiences as an Estate Sales Professional…

Heirs in doubt about how to proceed with an estate sale too often start by throwing household goods away – instead, call a recommended estate liquidator…

6:00am: Yeah, yeah, I know I missed a day…but you know how it is – I am never lazy, just busy. I spent about an hour an half going through auction results of items we had consigned to Harvey Clar’s, a local auction house…typically and in no way differently than our own clients, I groused about some of their results. Face it folks we are still in the throws of much uncertainty, prices and auctions results are somewhat depressed. And on the other hand, they are improving, and somewhat better than the prices we were getting last year. So OK, stiff upper lip and all, not bad, not terribly bad at all.

7:30am: Dropped off my son August in Petaluma and then made my way over to an appointment in the Novato area, to meet a fiduciary. Hey, it was the house of a hoarder. Not just any kind of hoarder, but the kind that not only did not know how to organize their stuff – or one who simply could not control their impulse to purchase way too much stuff, but the kind who allowed true debris to gather and pile everywhere. Not a pretty sight, and even by my standards truly staggering.

When I got there, the fiduciary offered me a mask, and I said no, that won’t be necessary…then she opened the door and we both stepped in…and 30 seconds later I wished I’d accepted her offer of a mask…

This is a house that will need a team of people to come through with 300-400 garbage bags, and haul most of it all away…people need people, and when we are alone…well, the emptiness has to get filled some how…for a hoarder, they fill emptiness with stuff…

By 11:30am: I am back in my office…reading emails, and feeling a bit queasy from my hoarder house experience. I carefully read an email from Missy Sullivan of Smart Money Magazine letting me know that they have published an article about estate sales that I was a source of information for…that’s good, more people need information about what to expect from having a professional conduct an estate sale for them…

12:00 to 4:00pm: Again I am a Ruby Lane Listing Machine – In the last 6 days, Valetta and I have listed over 100 items in our Ruby Lane Shop…listing on Ruby Lane is like putting money away in the bank – it’s like having a Rainy Day Fund…

Well Look At That, It’s 5:00pm: I go and pick up my son August, and we go to High Tech Burrito in Petaluma…I order three carnitas tacos, and he gets something called an enchilada style burrito…which is kind of like a burrito with sauce…I don’t know why this is, but the High Tech Burrito place in Petaluma is better than any of the other High Tech Burrito places…

7:00pm: The on again off again San Francisco Estate Sale is, well you guessed it – on again…and we will be rolling up there in a few days to begin the pre-estate sales process of setting up the house.

Also, this house has a Steinway Piano…love those, any house with a Steinway is a house for me. I’ll get to play it from time to time of course, and that’s just fine by me.

All The Best,

Martin Codina
